Drive-By Truckers have long been unafraid to speak their mind and follow their conscience. But with 2016's American Band, DBTs have made their most explicitly political album to date, as they speak their mind through song about issues poisoning the heart and soul of the United States. Still fueled by their trademark blend of hard rock and Southern roots music, American Band takes on the issues of racially motivated violence, the epidemic of mass shootings, the tug between pride in tradition and the need to cut free from a shameful past, the place of firearms in our culture, and where our elected officials have helped and hurt a nation in crisis. On the DBT website, the group's principal songwriter, Patterson Hood, wrote of the album, "American Band is a sort of rock and roll call to arms as well as a musical reset button for our band and the country we live in. Most of all, we look at it as the beginnings of some conversations that we, as a people very much need to begin having if we ever hope to break through the divisions that are threatening to tear us apart." ~ Mark Deming
