Well known as one of the most successful figures to emerge from the New York folk scene of the '80s, singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega began exploring a new side of her work in 2011. That year, Vega staged a one-woman show built around a song cycle inspired by the life and work of author Carson McCullers. Written in collaboration with Duncan Sheik, the songs that formed Lover, Beloved told the story of a woman whose art, life, and concerns were often ahead of her time and at odds with the culture. 2016's Lover, Beloved: Songs from an Evening with Carson McCullers is an album in which Vega performs the songs from her play, released as the show prepares for a new staging in Los Angeles. ~ Mark Deming

2年ぶりの新作は、作家のカーソン・マッカラーズにインスパイアされたもの。そもそもカーソンをテーマにした舞台の音楽をスザンヌが手掛け、そこからアルバムに発展したそうで、8曲はそのときに組んだダンカン・シェイクとの共作だ。ステージ映えしそうなピアノ曲や初期を想起させるアコギ主体のものなど収録曲は多彩だが、それらが一本の糸で縫われ、流れが良い。洞察力に富んだ歌詞や可愛らしい歌声も変わらず魅力的。
