The track information and the wording used by John Morales in the brief liner notes make it evident that most of the tracks on The M&M Mixes, Vol. 3 were previously unreleased and remixed within the last few years. Some of this material has been commercially released before, but it's not like disco DJs were scouring MP3 retailers in 2009 to locate something like an eight-minute version of "I Want You," included in the download-only Marvin Gaye compilation Then & Now. Morales: "Among the songs I selected for M&M III are a few of my personal favorites that in my opinion never had a proper extended version." The disco-era pioneer could trick most people into believing that these remixes were made around the time of the original releases, with the exception of certain subjects -- such as the Dramatics' "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" and Barry White's "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" -- that predated the disco 12" format. Morales, as usual, tends to take a reverent approach to the source material. Only the Blackbyrds' "Rock Creek Park" seems radical with the addition of an insistent kick drum. The catalogs of heavyweight disco labels like Philadelphia International, Salsoul, Prelude, and West End are raided, and though some of the picks seem obvious, it can be fascinating to compare new and old -- like Morales' lithe work on Skyy's "First Time Around" and Larry Levan's grittier 1980-issued mix of the same song. Some of the picks -- like Side Effect's vocal version of Ronnie Laws' "Always There," and Johnny Hammond's "Fantasy," a Mizell brothers production from 1975 -- are pleasant surprises and could be doubled in length without testing patience. This is a small treasure chest for DJs who still spin disco, as well as those who cannot get enough of it. ~ Andy Kellman
