Teenage Shutdown: She's a Pest!, compiled by Tim Warren (of Crypt Records), is another in the series of Teenage Shutdown mid-'60s garage rock/garage punk comps. Many of these singles came directly from the collection of Mike Markesich, who provides the liner notes. All of the analog-to-digital transfers were accomplished with a minimum of EQing, so the sound is as good as you can expect from scratchy needle-drops. As usual, there are only a handful of band photos to be found in the fold-out insert booklet, but there are colorful scans of the single labels. The Rovin' Flames, from Tampa, FL, contribute their homage to "Bo Diddley," originally released in June 1966, with Jimmy "Mouse" Morrison providing the shave-and-a-haircut lead guitar. The Insects, an obscure group from the Fontana and Pomona area east of Los Angeles, released three singles, but it's the A-side of their first 45 that's featured here, providing the title for this one. "Gone Gone Gone" is a track by the 3rd Evolution, led by Argot Meyer, who released two 45s before the band changed their name in 1966 and updated their playing style. The frantic "I Gotta Be Goin'" by the Playgue -- from Baton Rouge, LA, recorded in August 1965 -- has appeared previously on other comps, including the vinyl LP Louisiana Punk Groups From the Sixties, Vol. 2, and Sixties Archive, Vol. 3, on compact disc. The Living Ends -- a name used by many '60s groups; this group was from Patterson, NJ -- featured a future member of Looking Glass, who later had a hit with "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" in the early '70s. Their "Self-Centered Girl" has appeared on numerous comps. The Lavender Hour's "I've Gotta Way With Girls" from 1967 was later covered by the Chesterfield Kings. "The Last Time" by the Sceptres was a cover of the Rolling Stones' hit. The Chicago-based the Sceptres have been compiled frequently, as have the Royal Knights (from Arlington, TX) and the Primates (from Astoria, NY). ~ Bryan Thomas
