Teenage Shutdown: Howlin' for My Darlin' is one of the better installments in the Teenage Shutdown series. Fans of recordings by the early-'60s Rolling Stones, the Pretty Things, Them, and the Yardbirds will no doubt enjoy their frantic and even more out of control American counterparts, all of whom still languish in obscurity. It just goes to show that for every American group in the genre that sort-of made it -- like the Chicago-based garage band Shadows of Knight -- there were tons of others that didn't. Highlights here include Limey and the Yanks, the Jagged Edge (with three ace contributions in this volume, including a ripping version of the Pretty Things' "Big City"), the Undertakers (doing "Rosalyn," another Pretty Things cover), the Rogues ("Train Kept A-Rolling"), and the Dirty Shames. ~ Bryan Thomas
