Twelve different trumpeters are featured on this sampler, with the performances in three cases being leased from other labels. A few of the trumpeters (all of whom are heard on one number apiece, except for one cut that features both Bobby Shew and Tom Harrell) are somewhat well known (Vaughn Nark, Randy Brecker, Bobby Shew, Tom Harrell, Mike Vax, Allen Vizzutti, and Michael Phillip Mossman), while the other five are more obscure (Kevin Clark, Jim Manley, Dominic Spera, Tony Guerrero, and Bob Montgomery). Most of the music is boppish and straight-ahead (including Nark's workout on "Billie's Bounce," Vax's version of Shorty Rogers' "Short Stop," and Montgomery's "San Miguel") along with a few departures, including Brecker's fusion-ish "Guaruja," some Dixieland from Clark ("Struttin' With Some BBQ"), and the big band swing of Spera's "Rockin' Chair." All in all, this is a fine sampler that will introduce listeners to a wide variety of modern-day trumpeters. ~ Scott Yanow
