Even those who don't know that Quincy Jones had a long and storied career as a film and television composer would probably know at least two of his soundtrack works. "The Streetbeater," better known as the theme from SANFORD AND SON, is funky soul jazz with a heavy Latin groove and some of the most exciting Hammond organ work this side of Jimmy Smith. The even more light-hearted "Soul Bossa Nova," which mixes Cannonball Adderley-style horn blasts with Hubert Laws-like massed flutes, found an unexpected second life as the theme from Mike Myers's AUSTIN POWERS films. The other 16 songs might be less well known, but they show that Jones is a skilled and sympathetic soundtrack artist. Unlike composers who force their musical personalities on the films, Jones has a chameleon-like ability to subtly support the emotional and substantive tenor of any given film scene. He may not be as celebrated as Henry Mancini or Alfred Newman, but he's every bit their equal.
