The Avalanches' 2000 album Since I Left You is an undisputed classic of sample-based electronic music. Melding soft rock, sunshine pop, hip-hop, house, ambient, and a thousand other things, while mashing together an alleged 1,500 samples, give or take a few hundred, from sources near and far, it's a listening experience like no other. Nobody else has ever come close to creating anything quite like it, including the band itself. It took over 15 years for a follow-up to appear, but in mid-2016 they released Wildflower on Astralwerks/XL. Unlike Since I Left You, this is a star-studded affair featuring guest appearances from Father John Misty, Toro y Moi, Danny Brown, MF Doom, Jennifer Herrema, and Mercury Rev's Jonathan Donahue. The presence of real live humans doesn't mean that the group eschewed the use of samples; they are as prominent as ever over the course of the album's long, 21-track running time. ~ Tim Sendra

チルウェイヴなど後のインディーの流れに先駆けた前作『Since I Left You』から実に16年ぶり、オーストラリア出身の電子音楽集団が2枚目となるアルバムを発表した。彼らの特徴と言えば、数多くのサンプリングで構成された折衷的なサウンドだが、それはここでも健在。とりわけファンク、ソウル、ディスコ、ヒップホップといった要素が際立ち、まるで万華鏡のようにさまざまな音色が煌びやかに乱反射している。固定観念や常識といった枷を軽やかに外していくその姿は、音楽に対する深い愛情と造詣で満ち溢れ、自由を謳歌しているようにも見えよう。前作との大きな違いは〈声〉がより前面に出ている点か。ダニー・ブラウンやトロ・イ・モワら後輩アーティストから、マーキュリー・レヴのジョナサン・ドナヒューといったヴェテランまで、多くのゲストが歌やラップで華を添えていく。グループの帰還を告げる盛大な祝砲として、あまりにも完璧すぎる傑作だ。

ヒップホップを聴いたりサンプリング要素がある曲を沢山聴いていたつもりだったけど、曲を作るときはゼロから作詞作曲して自分の声で歌うやり方しかやってこなかった。だからサンプリングカルチャーについてまだ深く認識できていなかったのかもしれない。ゆえに感じたことのない気持ちよさでふらふらした。アルバムを聴き終えたらニュートリノほど小さくなって音楽好きの人の頭の中を旅したような気持ちになった。権利の壁を越えて世の中にサンプリングという形でラヴを放出できるの、作り手としてめちゃくちゃ最高だろうなと思う。沈着でいるより、ほんとうに好きなことは好きって表明したほうがいいなんかかっこいいね。人生終えたあと解剖されてしまったときに身体の中から聴いていた音楽がビーズクッション割いたときみたいにどばどばでてくるような生き物になりたい。走馬灯みたいにビートルズの曲が現れては消えるのが最高。春を感じるアルバム。サンプリングとは、春一番。

歴史的名盤「Since I Left You」から16年経って突如リリースされた彼らの新作。前作が静かなクラブミュージックだとすれば、今作は荒々しいクラブミュージックと言えるだろう、というかHIP HOP的なビートが多いからそう言う間奏になるのかもしれない。前作になかった要素では客演を迎えている点。けど、やっぱりサンプリングセンスはずば抜けていて聞いていて発見しかない。最高。

歴史的傑作「Since I Left You」から16年、、超待望のThe Avalanches 2ndアルバム。色彩豊かなサンプリングミュージックに華を添えるのは多彩なゲストミュージシャン。Danny Brown、Toro y Moi、Biz Markieらが歌やラップで応戦。16年のブランクの期待に見事に応えた圧巻の出来。FUJI ROCK '17でのパフォーマンスも最高でした！
