The two-disc set JAMES BROWN LIVE: THE MASTERS consists of two concert performances, one at Chastain Park and the other at the infamous Studio 54. They feature all that you'd expect from a James Brown concert: a hyperactive rhythm section, plenty of horns, the patented funk guitar and, of course, the energetic Godfather of Soul himself. Though the discs tend to repeat some material, there's no shortage of James Brown classics, including "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose," "It's Too Funky in Here," "Try Me," "Get on the Good Foot," "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," and "I Got You (I Feel Good)."
Both discs feature an extended version of "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" that includes some trademark James Brown screaming fits ("Is it alright if I scream, people?") and long, spoken tributes to legendary musicians such as Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, John Lennon, Janis Joplin, and Elvis Presley. Despite the digressions (which are entertaining in their own right), these two concerts are fine examples of The Hardest Working Man in Show Business at work.
