アメリカ国内でもよほどの合唱好きでない限り、その名を知る人はいないであろう合唱作曲家、ランダル・トンプソン(1899-1984)の「レクイエム」。アカペラの二重合唱による5つの場面で構成された全曲は非常に劇的であり、合唱のグループの一つは常に"愛する人の喪失を嘆く会葬者"、もう一つのグループは"会葬者を慰め、現実に戻るように説得する視点"で歌っていくように書かれている。曲自体は調性感を持ち、時には壮麗なフーガを形成、「死者の安息を祈る」という通常のレクイエムの概念とは異なる作品となっている。フィラデルフィア・シンガーズ/ディヴィッド・ヘイエス指揮による2014年録音。 (C)RS
