1984年リリースのセカンド・アルバムの2016リマスター盤!英ロック誌「Q」をして、「このアルバムでメタリカは現代メタル・シーンの主役となった」と言わしめた傑作!
スタジアム・バンドとなった現在でもほぼ毎回ライヴでプレイされる大名曲「クリーピング・デス」(フェス等ではオープニングでもよくプレイされる)、「フォー・フーム・ザ・ベル・トールズ」等を収録。前作以上にドラマティックな構成を持った曲が増え、バンドとしての幅も大きく広がった。2012年にはアメリカで6xプラチナム・ディスクに認定された。ファーストに続きこのアルバムもインディペンデントでのリリースとなり、この2枚でバンドが魅せた「異端」の力でメイン・ストリームをねじ伏せることになる。

Ride the Lightning finds Metallica aggressively expanding their compositional technique and range of expression. Every track tries something new; every musical experiment succeeds mightily. The lyrics push into new territory -- more personal, more socially conscious, less metal posturing. But the true heart of Ride the Lightning lies in its rich musical imagination. There are extended progressive epics; tight, concise groove-rockers; thrashers that blow anything on Kill 'Em All out of the water; and the barest hints of melody that have been added to the choruses. Heavy metal hadn't seen this kind of ambition since Judas Priest's late-'70s classics, and Ride the Lightning effectively rewrote the rule book for a generation of thrashers. ‪前作1stとは打って変わって叙情感漂うイントロ。アルバム2作目にしてもう冒険しだしたかと思うのも束の間、開始40秒ほどで1stを凌ぐ疾走感で大激走！ヘヴィさと攻撃性も前作よりグンと増し、本作をメタリカの1番の名作に挙げるファンが多いのも納得。前作同様ライブの定番曲も多く、特に名曲⑦「Creeping Death」は必聴！‬

メタリカの2ndアルバム。1stに引き続きのスラッシュメタル全開ですが、ただ早いだけじゃない今作ではそこへ重さが加わり厚みのある作品。

自分が初めて買ったメタリカのアルバムなので思いでの一枚！スラッシュ・メタルはこのアルバムで教えてもらいました。内容はもちろん最高！
