Strange Little Birds

過去に3度のグラミー賞ノミネート、また35カ国以上でライヴ経験があるガービッジ。デビュー20周年をむかえたことを記念して、全世界売上400万枚を突破したセルフ・タイトル・デビュー・アルバムの20周年記念盤を2015年10月にリリースしたことが記憶に新しい。あれから約半年、ついに4年ぶりとなるファン待望のニュー・アルバムが、届けられることが明らかとなった。『ストレンジ・リトル・バーズ』と題された今作は、バンドにとって6枚目で、セルフ・プロデュース作品。ブッチ・ヴィグのスタジオで制作された後、ロサンゼルスのRed Razor Soundsにてレコーディングされた。テーマとなったのは、最近受け取ったファン・レター、またメンバーが幼少期に好んで聴いていた作品など、ヴァラエティに富んでいる。

This sixth album from the Scottish-American rockers is the follow-up to 2012's Not Your Kind of People and the second to be self-released through their own Stunvolume label. Described by the band as a back-to-basics record, emotionally vulnerable, and their least produced to date, the album was recorded in drummer/producer Butch Vig's basement and includes the raw, soulful single "Empty." ~ John D. 昨2015年にデビュー20周年を迎えたことも関係しているのか、4年ぶりのアルバムは原点を見つめ直したような一枚となった。歪んだギターの音色と不穏なデジタル・ノイズ、そして退廃的なシャーリーの歌声がドラマティックに融合していく。社会が抱える問題を生々しく浮き彫りにした歌詞も凄い。ヒリヒリした雰囲気は初作をも凌ぐほどだ。流石はブッチ・ヴィグ。昨今のグランジ回帰勢が泣いて逃げ出す(!?)大傑作です。

ファーストアルバム『G』を発売してから20年、前作からも4年という歳月を経て発表される通算6枚目の本作。紅一点のヴォーカル、シャーリー・マンソン(意外と知られていないがスコットランドのエディンバラ出身!)も本作について、「今までの中で一番『G』に近い作品」と語っているように、昔からのファンが聴けば原点回帰的な雰囲気を感じ取れるだろう。きっと、本作が彼らの自主レーベルから発売されることで、様々な制約や縛りがなく、自由に創作活動ができた結果ではないだろうか。改めて、ブッチ・ヴィグがメンバーとしていること自体、羨ましい限り。そして、スコットランドにハズレなし。
