Volume four of "Young Bird," the Masters of Jazz label's six-part chronological survey of Charlie Parker's first seven years as a recording artist, is a 20-track chronological sampler of his creative activity between May 25 and September 4, 1945. It opens with three gorgeous ballads sung by Sarah Vaughan (originally issued on Continental 78 rpm records) backed by the Dizzy Gillespie Sextet. "Sweet Georgia Brown" was performed by the Charlie Parker Sextet (with tenor saxophonist Don Byas, pianist Al Haig, bassist Curly Russell, and drummer Stan Levey) at Lincoln Square in New York City on May 30, 1945. "Blue 'n' Boogie" was performed by the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet (same rhythm section with Bird, Diz and vibraphonist Red Norvo) at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia on June 5, 1945. The following day Bird and Diz participated in a Dial recording date at the WOR studios as members of Red Norvo's Selected Sextet, along with tenor saxophonist Flip Phillips, pianist Teddy Wilson, bassist Slam Stewart, and drummer Gordon "Specs" Powell. This session resulted in such excellent music that the inclusion of alternate takes (including no less than five renditions of the "Congo Blues") should be regarded as a delectable treat rather than an inconvenience. Apparently, in order to make room for the extra takes, the producers of this compilation omitted the Bird and Diz Town Hall concert of June 22, 1945, skipping instead to three sides cut for Apollo records on September 4, 1945 by pianist Sir Charles Thompson and His All Stars. This marvelous band teamed Bird with trumpeter Buck Clayton, tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, guitarist Danny Barker, bassist Jimmy Butts, and drummer J.C. Heard. Here then is what Charlie Parker sounded like when he was 24 going on 25 years of age. The opportunity to study what he and his fellow innovators were accomplishing at the crossroads of swing and bop makes this a particularly rewarding installment in the Masters of Jazz series. ~ arwulf arwulf
