The Go-Betweens were one of the first Australian bands to make a name for themselves in the New Wave era of 1978-80, and soldiered on until 1989. Their brooding synthesis of Bob Dylan, the Velvet Underground, Neil Young, and the baroque-pop of the Left Banke and the early Bee Gees never quite took the world by storm commercially, but they earned a small but devoted international following. After more than a decade, they decided to give it another go with some assistance from the Pacific Northwest's indie-rock goddesses Sleater-Kinney; it sounds like they never left. The gently sardonic "Heart and Home" and the stark, eerie, baroque-tinged "He Lives My Life" would've fit perfectly on their classic albums TALLULAH or SPRING HILL FAIR. The moody rocker "The Clock" has the stripped-down murmur of late-'70s punk (see Wire's PINK FLAG, early R.E.M., or Sleater-Kinney's THE HOT ROCK). For the most part, the Go-Betweens' pop/rock side takes a back seat to their melancholy balladry, but that's fine, as they do haunted melancholy better than most.
