Scanner: Robin Rimbaud. The cut-up whispering samples that open this disc approach human speech but never quite arrive. The dark electronica of LAUWARM INSTRUMENTALS sounds from the start like it might make an excellent soundtrack for a remake of THE EXCORCIST. Robin Rimbaud, the individual behind Scanner, has a list of credentials that any artist would envy; a commission for the Metropolitan Museum in Seoul, Korea; a BBC radio production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream"; and a soundtrack for a ballet at The Paris Opera House, among others. This disc travels from dark ambient to drum-and-bass. It's thick with "found" voice fragments and thoughtfully orchestrated segues. Listeners should be ready to turn the volume up, as many of the most rewarding sections are barely louder than silence.
