Robin Rimbaud, a.k.a. Scanner, makes studio voodoo with digital theorist DJ Spooky, and the ensuing melee fairly sizzles the brain. The best collaborations effectively blend the artists' individual reps so the result sounds wholly unlike their respective voices, and Scanner and Spooky make certain that happens here. Other than the noxious noise hip-hop that is "Journey," reminiscent of Spooky's work on SONGS OF A DEAD DREAMER, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD is two guys, some electro-toys, and a studio.
"Edison" is a wild potpourri of sampled raps, drunken swaggering beats, and mangled synth filters. During "Dialogic," the boys set their relays on stun, and fire off individual salvos of roaring digital noise, blurred ambulance clarion calls, short-wave interference and hazardous sonic waste. An exercise in musique concrete by two of the most obtuse names in electronica, THE QUICK AND THE DEAD demonstrates that adventurism and the disobeying of categorization are food for the soul.
