"Hey, it would be great if we got together and maybe wrote something sometime." Iggy Pop texted those words to Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, and thus was launched one of the more interesting rock collaborations in the last ten years. For the album, Post Pop Depression, proto-punk icon Pop co-wrote a set of new songs with QOTSA's leader, guitarist, and producer, and recorded them in a series of self-funded sessions that Homme says were guided by one rule: "This was to go where neither of us had gone before." もうすぐイギー御大も69歳になるという。ライヴでのあのパフォーマンスを観る限り、彼が私達と同じように歳を重ねているのか疑問だが、4年ぶりの新作を聴きなおさらその疑問は深まるばかり。アークティック・モンキーズ等をプロデュースしたことで知られるジョシュ・ホーミと共に作り上げた本作。どことなく、デヴィッド・ボウイのベルリン時代を思わせ、ルー・リードの持つ退廃の美学を漂わせる印象の中に、今までとは違ったアプローチで作品全体の高みを目指している感すらある。破天荒なイメージが先行しがちな彼が、ここまで音の緻密さを追求した作品は初だろう。心からボウイに聴かせたかった。
