In fact, one can hear the not-so-distant rumbles of the punk rock revolution as Rondstadt gives Deborah Harry a run for her money on "How Do I Make You." In another context, one also hears the natural Mexicali strains emerging on her beautifully realized version of Roy Orbison's "Blue Bayou," a decade before the two groundbreaking collections of Mexican songs dedicated to her father. Continuing her established practice of introducing the best in singer-songwriters, we have her definitive takes on Warren Zevon's "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" and Karla Bonoff's haunting "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me."
