The Monument Story is a two-disc overview of the Monument label spanning the late '50s through the mid '70s. Monument had a number of left-field chart successes and had an impressive roster of talents, including Ray Stevens, Kris Kristofferson, Dolly Parton and Roy Orbison (all of whom are represented on this anthology). Although some may find Monument recordings intrinsically interesting, most listeners will be drawn to this collection by the many hard-to-find hits, including Henson Cargill's "Skip a Rope," the Dixie Belles' "(Down at) Papa Joe's," and Dick Flood's version of "The Three Bells." The 36 tracks include some rarities as well, notably Willie Nelson's "I Never Cared for You," one of a handful of sides he recorded for Monument before signing with RCA in the early '60s. ~ Greg Adams
