ヨーロッパに移住して以降ケニー・ドリューはめったに米国へ戻りませんでした。これは、欧州移住後の米国録音としては、77年にNYCで残したSteeple Chase盤に次ぐ2度目のもので、ロスでのレコーディング。リロイ・ヴィネガーとフランク・バトラーという西海岸屈指の黒人ミュージシャンがドリューのバックについたこともあって、ドリューも50年代のようなグルーヴを取り戻しており、アルバム全体から、このころSteeple Chaseに録音していたアルバム群とは異なる"黒さ"が感じられます。ラストの「Yesterdays」は、同じ日の録音ですが、オリジナルLPには収録されていなかったピアノ・ソロ・パフォーマンス。これもまた味わい深い演奏となっています。

The fine bop-based pianist Kenny Drew permanently left the United States in 1961 to live in Europe and eventually Copenhagen. He only recorded back in his homeland during a 1978 visit that resulted in a pair of Xanadu LPs. For this date Drew teamed up with bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Frank Butler for three familiar standards, an obscurity and three of his recent straightahead originals. The years overseas had not hurt the pianist in the least and he had clearly grown as an improviser. Worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow|
