Perhaps the 5th Dimension's most ambitious album, PORTRAIT contains at least one bona fide classic track, Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "One Less Bell to Answer." Even if your taste doesn't run to Bacharach's harmonically sophisticated, verging-on-Broadway pop/rock, you'd need a heart of stone not to be moved by Marilyn McCoo's astounding, emotionally draining vocal performance. The rest of the album swings from interesting to compelling. The former is represented by a medley combining The Declaration of Independence with Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" and the Rascals' "People Got to Be Free," as close to a political statement as this group ever made. Moreover, their typically authoritative version of Laura Nyro's melodically addictive anti-war "Save the Country" is simply irresistible.
