This 1999 release was long overdue, since none of Lucien's earliest material existed in print since RCA deleted his Best of several years prior. This disc ranges from the singer's first album, I Am Now, to Mother Nature's Son from the early '90s. You can hear his influence on the quiet storm formats yet to come in tunes like "Would You Believe in Me." This disc drops off slightly in the second half, as Lucien (and his labels?) cast around for a for commercial niche for his hard-to-piegonhole style. "Sweet Control," with its Jeff Lorber-produced urban groove, sticks out like a sore thumb amongst classics like "Rashida," "Dindi" and "Creole Lady." Still, everything a Lucien fan would want is here (except maybe the original "Shadow of Your Smile"). A great romantic crooner with an island touch. ~ Frank Federico
