The illustrious Mr. Watkins indicates in the liner notes for HOLOGRAPHIC TAPESTRIES that the listener is encouraged to program his player according to the odd or even track numbers, as each "set" together is coordinated for either contemplation or energy. Try it if you like; that's what programmability is for. But TAPESTRIES works its particular magic on you even if you just play it as is. With nods towards his old prog-rock flame Happy the Man on the propulsive "Elephants and Ants" and references to his recent atmospheric past during the velvety percolations of "Pads," Watkins coaxes you into his ever-expanding sonic habitat. If anything, the album rewards one willing to invest some patience in it. Those hyper personalities that need instant fixing can merely jump to such a piece as "The Traveler" and get swept into its synth-rock soup. In short, variety is the key here, and Watkins offers it to us in colorful spades.
