On 2006's THE EVOLUTION, Ciara's follow-up to her breakthrough album, GOODIES, the Atlanta-based singer offers an assured set of songs that expand her signature crunk-leaning R&B sound. Featuring a cadre of ubiquitous producers, most notably the Black Eyed Peas' will.i.am and the Neptunes' Pharrell, and a handful of superstar rappers (50 Cent and Lil Jon, among others), the record largely finds Ciara in a poppier mode, as best revealed on the sensual, synth-heavy "Promise" and "Get Up," a frenetic dance number that incorporates Chamillionaire's deft rhymes to great effect. While GOODIES marked Ciara's arrival as a major R&B/hip-hop star, THE EVOLUTION cements her status as an artist who can work both within and outside of those stylistic boundaries.

クランク&Bの普及に拍車を掛けた“Goodies”を含む同名デビュー・アルバムの大ヒットで、一躍シーンのプリンセスとなったシアラ、待望のセカンド・アルバム。カミリオネアが参加したジャジー・フェイ制作のハイパー・エレクトロ“Get Up”、変調声を巧妙に配したポロウ・ダ・ドン製の幻想的な“Promise”といった先行カットの2曲をはじめとして、得意のダンスを思う存分発揮できるような、アトランタらしいブーティーなサウンドが満載!　同じくポロウ作となる勇壮な疾走バンガー“Bang It Up”もクソヤバイ出来だし、ロドニー・ジャーキンスのオールド・スクーリーなアップ、50セントとの美メロ・バウンス、あきらかにベース・ミュージックの進化形と言えるリル・ジョンやネプチューンズ曲などなど、またも新たなトレンドを産み出すことになりそうなトラックが並んでいる。表題どおりに〈進化〉を遂げた強力な一枚だ。
