The one album Bow Wow Wow recorded between its split with manager Malcolm McLaren (former manager of the Sex Pistols and future solo performer) and the band's eventual breakup, WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH received universally bad reviews upon its release. In retrospect, however, this is easily the quartet's most accomplished album. Finally free from McLaren's exploitation of underage Burmese singer Annabella Lwin, the band's image changed from sleazy to flirty; "Aphrodisiac" doesn't go into detail about what the title subject does, and "Arrow in My Quiver" is coy, not tasteless. The hyperkinetic "What's the Time (Hey Buddy)" and "Roustabout" are engaging bubblegum trifles, but the album's true highlight--and by far the best song of Bow Wow Wow's brief career--is the brilliant single "Do You Wanna Hold Me?" A near-perfect, endlessly hummable slice of ultra-perky, lightly-tropicalized pop, "Do You Wanna Hold Me?" is one of the finest singles of the '80s.
