Unknown Contributor Role: Michelle Phillips. The Monterey International Pop Festival of May 1967 was conceived and produced by the Mamas And The Papas' leader, John Phillips, and manager, Lou Adler. Naturally, the Mamas and the Papas got a prime slot alongside The Who, Otis Redding, and Jimi Hendrix, and their eight-song set is one of the few to be released on CD in full. It's of more historic importance than musical, but it's impressive to hear how well Cass Elliott, Michelle Phillips, John Phillips, and Denny Doherty sang together outside of the studio. If you don't feel like shelling out for Rhino's three-disc box set--which it must be said, has far superior fidelity--then this is a more than adequate taste of a momentous occasion in pop history.
