Originally released on Kapp Records in 1971.
Well, let's call it Cher's FIRST comeback. After a disastrous first stab at a film career and a slide in Sonny and Cher's commercial fortunes, Cher signed to Kapp Records and reinvented herself as a solo artist with a line in dramatic story songs that played up her Native American heritage. The first of those was the AM smash "Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves," the title track of this 1971 album. (Actually, the album was originally nameless; as the single hit the charts, Kapp pulled the album and reissued it with a new title and cover photo.) That Snuff Garrett-produced hit isn't the album's only gem, however; the (probably inadvertently) gender-bending "The Way of Love," a dramatic reading of the Hollies smash "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother," and the jangly bubblegum of "I Hate To Sleep Alone" (which puckishly lifts the guitar riff from the Searchers' version of Sonny Bono's hit "Needles and Pins") are equally fine, if slightly less commercial. After the filler-ridden, often sloppy Sonny & Cher albums, GYPSYS, TRAMPS & THIEVES was a surprise: perhaps the first consistently high-quality Cher album.
