Although Reba McEntire had been a recording artist for close to a decade before the release of MY KIND OF COUNTRY, this 1986 album was a breakthrough. Her previous albums featured slick post-URBAN COWBOY pop-country tunes and a glamour queen image, but MY KIND OF COUNTRY offered instead a fresh-faced country girl, complete with jeans and an oversized belt buckle, on the cover, and pure country tunes in the manner of George Strait and Randy Travis in between the grooves. Publicly aligning herself with the new-traditionalist wing of the country music scene was a smart move on McEntire's part, because besides reaffirming her real-country bona fides with the music's core audience, it separated her from the hordes of cookie-cutter country queens who were milling about Nashville at the time. Songs like the hit single "How Blue" are feistier and far more memorable than McEntire's forgettable early tunes, and, in general, MY KIND OF COUNTRY sounds much less dated than many other country albums from the '80s.
