Mighty Clouds of Joy have taken the sound of the gospel quartet in new directions, and the their appearances as the opening act for such artists as the Rolling Stones and Marvin Gaye have brought their music to a wider audience. One of the first gospel groups to use bass, drum, and keyboard backing, the Mighty Clouds bridge the gap between traditional gospel, soul, and R&B. GLORY HALLELUJA finds them moving toward the more contemporary style that would eventually land them on the pop charts. The group shows its gospel roots on such songs as "Nearer to Thee" and "Judgement Day," while on "You'll Never Know" and other tracks the group delves into a lively R&B style that puts a new shine on a traditional sound.
