This European compilation presents most of Jay and the Americans' U.S. chart hits, missing only a few of their lesser singles. (The chief omission is their final chart single, "Capture the Moment," which didn't reach the Top 40.) There are no annotations beyond songwriting credits, and the sequencing mixes things up chronologically so that "She Cried," which features original lead singer John "Jay" Traynor, comes after a couple of songs with his more familiar replacement, David "Jay Black" Blatt, which sounds odd. Also, there are annoying bits of studio chatter at the beginnings of a few cuts. (Reissue compilers, who apparently never listen to anything twice, think such things are cute; most actual consumers find them irritating.) But this is a good collection of Jay and the Americans' singles that has turned up in the U.S. as an inexpensive import. ~ William Ruhlmann
