Steve Mancha's gritty recordings personify deep soul, uptown style. Don Davis didn't reap much financial success producing Mancha, but 30 some years after the fact, the recordings are finally getting the acclaimed they deserved. Mostly from outside the United States, despite hit recordings with 100 Proof Aged in Soul and 8th Day, Mancha is virtually unknown at home. He recorded these 20 tracks on Groovesville, Wheelsville, and Groove City -- all owned by Davis -- from 1968 to 1969. There are too many great performances to mention them all, but the short list includes "Did My Baby Call," "Hate Yourself in the Morning," "I Don't Want to Lose You," "Don't Make Me a Story Teller," and "Think Before You Walk Away."
