Another volume in the wonderful series of CDs offering the chronological recordings of Slim Gaillard from the '30s and '40s. Over the course of 20 selections Gaillard is joined by, among others, Charlie Parker, Dodo Marmarosa, and Dizzy Gillespie.
The enduring qualities of this music include relentless invention coupled with disarming friendliness. Gaillard was capable of offering a steady stream of faux-foreign language raps (as on "Cuban Rhumba") one moment, and the next a convincing, albeit sleepy-headed romantic ballad ("As Long As I Have Your Love"). His humorous songs, such as "Cement Mixer," feature winning group chorus vocals that make the absurd seem natural. Furthermore, Gaillard was an equally capable player on both piano and guitar, soloing with genuine character. This historical series is timeless music and essential listening.
