Producers: The Raincoats, Geoff Travis, Mayo Thompson. Includes liner notes by Kurt Cobain (Nirvana). This is part of the Geffen Goldline Series. A scrappy blast of ramshackle D.I.Y. pop, the Raincoats' debut self-titled LP was a revelation upon its release in 1979, and it's just as inspiring today. The lineup consisted of Gina Birch, Alan da Silva, Slits drummer Palmolive, and secret weapon Vicky Aspinall on violin, and resulted in one of the most unusual sounds in the post-Sex Pistols U.K. punk scene. Though tracks such as "Fairytale in a Supermarket" and "Life On the Line"--built on gleefully amateurish guitar-bass riffs, off-kilter rhythms, and frenetic violin swells--brim with the energy of punk, they are their own utterly unique creations. Other tracks such as "In Love" and "The Void" distance themselves even further from the slam dancers, and come-off as Velvet Underground-inspired drone-pop pieces with a touching, bittersweet core. One of the very first all-female punk bands, the Raincoats triumphed on their debut, placing heart and guts above proficiency, and personal vision ahead of genre orthodoxy. So inspiring to so many were the Raincoats, that Universal reissued all three of the band's long out-of-print albums in the 1990s at the behest of one of their biggest superstars, Kurt Cobain.

Spin (5/01, p.109) - Ranked #9 in Spin's "50 Most Essential Punk Records" - "...Clattering, chaotic, shrill, funny, and furious, it's the sound of 4 women inthrall to their own premenstrual vision..." Q (Magazine) (p.133) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]heir energised art-folk songs, such as 'You're A Million,' or the newly added, snotty 'Fairytale In The Supermarket,' have an itchy quality that continues to intrigue." Mojo (Publisher) (3/03, p.76) - Ranked #45 in Mojo's "Top 50 Punk Albums" - "...The Raincoats' debut was punk's DIY aesthetic writ large..." NME (Magazine) (10/23/93, p.37) - (9) - "...finds [The Raincoats] at their sparkiest..." Record Collector (magazine) (p.90) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[S]tandout tracks such as 'The Void' and 'In Love' portray a Velvets-heavy heart, the latter's violin straight out of John Cale's finest box of scratchy tricks..." Clash (Magazine) - "Their warped, deadpan cover of 'Lola' by The Kinks is deliciously subverted....Magnificently timeless -- to be unearthed and taken delight in."

Picking the "best" Raincoats is more an intellectual exercise than it is a work of thoughtful criticism. So, to make it easy for the benighted, all three studio releases are absolutely essential. Their live cassette is wonderful, but not the ideal entry point. Better yet, start with their debut, a soaring, daring, avant-garde-influenced folk-punk record. Don't let the words "avant-garde" scare you off; the Raincoats are not harsh or unapproachable. In fact, this music, even at its most dissonant, is stunning and captivating. There's a great cover of the Kinks' "Lola" that's so skewed and obtuse, Ray Davies probably never dreamed it could sound this way. Reissued by Geffen on CD with extra tracks in 1995. ~ John Dougan

下手な演奏でも、全然問題なくかっこいい。そしてみんな可愛い。コートニー・バーネットとかもかなり影響うけてそうですよね。
