Of Montreal includes: Kevin Barnes (vocals, guitar, lap guitar, banjo, piano, keyboards, bass, drums, bells); Derek Almstead (vocals, guitars, bass, drums); Jamey Huggins (vocals, drums, percussion); Julian Kester (vocals, saw); Bryan Helium (vocals); Andrew Rieger (spoken vocals); John Fernandes (violin, background vocals); Heather MacIntosh (cello); Dottie Alexander (clarinet, keyboards, background vocals); Scott Spillane (horns); Pete Erchick (piano); A. C. Forrester (melodica, lap guitar, penny whistle, bass, bass drum, toy piano, car horn); Josh McKay (vibraphone); Rob Carter (upright bass); Jeremy Barnes (drums, background vocals); Laura Hetsler, Jeremy Ayers, Hank Wren, John Dazze, Laura Glenn (background vocals). Recorded from September 1997 to October 1998. From the idiosyncratic Elephant 6 pop collective that includes Olivia Tremor Control, Apples In Stereo and Neutral Milk Hotel comes the similarly inclined Of Montreal. Like their aforementioned pals, Of Montreal favors the '60s pop sounds pioneered by the Beach Boys, Beatles, Kinks, etc. With a healthy dose of light-hearted humor and breathlessly catchy songs that display a gift for melody, THE GAY PARADE is a pop tour de force. Giddy high harmonies, effervescent organ and piano and oddities like musical saw and pennywhistle will undoubtedly steer the listener toward that most overused (but in this case unavoidable) of adjectives, "quirky." The elaborate, skewed psychedelia of the arrangements (which also successfully incorporate strings and horns) is the perfect complement to these loopy pop gems.

商品の紹介

CMJ (3/1/99, p.26) - "...Mastermind Kevin Barnes presents a series of colorful characters throughout these 16 tracks....consistently upbeat thanks to whimsical instrumentation, sing-along melodies and bouncy tempos,....its exuberant songs offer a much-needed escape from an angst-filled world."
Rovi

The Gay Parade is indie pops very own Sgt. Peppers, a richly detailed, grandly ambitious concept record which forgoes the ponderous pretensions the phrase implies to instead exult in the simple joys of everyday life. Kevin Barnes songs radiate a childlike wonder and boundless enthusiasm, discovering beauty in the most unlikely of places; lyrics suggest psychedelic nursery rhymes, populated by absurdist characters (each and every one depicted on the jacket art) sketched in Crayola across a series of majestic melodies and ornate arrangements which belie the records surface naivete. For all of The Gay Parades effervescence and whimsy, theres also a melancholy that pervades songs like Jacques Lamure, The Autobiographical Grandpa, and My Friend Will Be Me, recalling the lovelorn hues of the previous Of Montreal record, The Bedside Drama: A Petite Tragedy. Far from deflating the euphoria, however, these moments simply acknowledge the necessity of sadness and loss to the human experience, and deem them worthy of celebration as well. These are songs in the key of life, Zen-like expressions of simplicity and innocence resonating with remarkable complexity and wisdom. ~ Jason Ankeny
