Since the '70s, this longtime mainstay of New York's downtown scene has dedicated himself to exploring previously uncharted realms of noise guitar and contributed his skronk to many a project. Meanwhile, having produced records for Caetano Veloso and Marisa Monte, and translated lyrics for other Brazilian artists, Lindsay has become something of a musical missionary, bringing new sounds back and forth across the equator. While these contributions may appear at first irreconcilable, Lindsay has managed the task with a certain nerdy grace. Having dipped his toes in the water with the band Ambitious Lovers, Lindsay now fully bares the Brazilian influence. On MUNDO CIVILAZADO, he welds neurotic-romantic lyrics to the understated punch of the bossa nova: "In all its innocence, my samba/ may be hiding some malice." Elsewhere, he creates hybrids all his own by blending samples, abstract noise, and lush instrumentation together with his own wry vocals, which often walk a fine line between the ironic and the sincere.
