Although built from the remnants of Tesla, Soulmotor's self-titled sophomore release has little of the original band's flavor. In fact, the band has more in common with modern-day heavy metal bands such as Monster Magnet than it does with the rock bands of the '70s and '80s. Classical rock guitars are occasionally utilized, but are more often neglected in favor of heavy metal-style solos and pounding basslines. Lead singer Darin Wood's gruff bellowing vocals establish even greater distance from pop/rock influences, producing an ominous impression in many of the band's songs. Although at times inconsistent in its dreary sound, even within songs, Soulmotor is not a band to be taken lightly. Its music hits hard and has an aggressive edge that will not be denied. This is a band that sound like it's out to do some damage, so you'd better not get in its way. ~ David Reamer
