More of an album of folk songs suitable for children than an album of children's folk songs, the 14-track compilation FOR KIDS AND JUST PLAIN FOLKS finds folksinger/musicologist Pete Seeger in an educational mode. While the songs themselves aren't educational (though "Be Kind to Your Parents" obviously has some prescriptive value), the educational aspect of the album, exposing children to examples of traditional folk music from around the globe, is obvious. Happily, it's also a wildly entertaining collection, with particular highlights including "Wimoweh" (a more traditional version of the African folk tune later adapted into the pop hit "The Lion Sleeps Tonight") and other familiar tracks alongside more obscure gems such as the lighthearted "Here's to Cheshire, Here's to Cheese."
