Those national treasures from Canton, Ohio, who brought us R&B smashes like "Backstabbers" and "Love Train," return with an interesting new sound. On LOVE YOU TO TEARS, the trio consists of Eddie Levert Sr., Walter Williams, and new member Eric Grant. For the '90s, The O'Jays have adopted a stripped-down, modern R&B approach. "Turned Out" is typical of the tunes here; a steady, mid-tempo beat over which the group shows off their still-prodigious vocal talents. Levert still has one of the most arresting voices in soul, and still knows how to use it. His gospel roots still shine through, and even though the topic may be unrequited love, in "Tuned Out" he still "goes to church" with the best of them, scatting up and down with powerful, spontaneous bursts of sound. This group, together in one form or another for more than three decades, has managed to put together an extremely soulful, completely modern-sounding record. But with talent like theirs, that should come as no surprise to anyone.
