Though he'd been lurking around the fringes of the hip-hop scene for a while, Hi-Tek first made a major splash on the underground hip-hop scene via his collaboration with Talib Kweli on REFLECTION ETERNAL. That album set a standard for progressive hip-hop that was followed by the more-successful BLACK STAR by Kweli and Mos Def, but Hi-Tek bounces back with HI-TEKNOLOGY. Kweli, Common, and a host of other underground hip-hoppers join Hi-Tek on this blast of intensity and creativity from the epicenter of modern rap. Though Hi-Tek occasionally indulges in thug-oriented imagery, he's got larger concerns on his mind. Enlightenment and transcendence are the overriding themes of "The Sun God," for example. And on "All I Need is You," he delivers an ode to romantic fealty that's emotionally light years beyond what most street-cred rappers seem capable of. The sophisticated, highly textured production is heady enough to support the most high-minded of sentiments, but still funky without resorting to jeep beats.
