Recalling the '70s, the Gaza Strippers offered a hard rocking and fun blend of glam rock, punk and power pop on Laced Candy. The band gets its sneering, bratty attitude from punk, while its sense of fun comes more from glam and power pop. The Strippers' sound brings to mind '70s artists ranging from Cheap Trick and the New York Dolls to John Lydon and Generation X, and that sound draws you in and holds your attention even though this CD isn't outstanding -- generally enjoyable, but imperfect and a bit uneven. When the Strippers really get going, however, you can hear how much potential they have. "C'mon Join the Ride," "Ape" and "Ying and Yang the Flower Pot Man" let you know that the Strippers were certainly a band to keep an eye on. A label that loved records long after they had become obsolete, Man's Ruin released six of this CD's ten songs on limited-edited 10-inch vinyl. ~ Alex Henderson|
