Arranger: John Barry .
Although he's better known as one of the great film composers, John Barry began his career leading a (sort of) rock band at the epicenter of the pre-Beatles British music scene. This collection was recorded just prior to his departure for the greener pastures of the James Bond series, and is all-instrumental, heavy on the twangy guitars and strings.
Barry's style is part of a genre that flourished after Al Caiola's hit recording of the theme from THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (fittingly, the first track here is an M7 cover version). Barry wrings endless variations on this theme, whether he's remaking tunes from other movies (Nino Rota's "Rocco's Theme") or covering Buddy Holly ("It Doesn't Matter Anymore"). Towards the end of the album, he varies the formula a wee bit by adding Clavioline, an early electronic keyboard, apparently in emulation of mad producer Joe Meek's then-current work with the Tornadoes. Vastly entertaining stuff, albeit best enjoyed in small doses.
