A cut-price box set may seem like a contradiction in terms, but this triple-disc John Stewart compilation answers to that description. It contains three separate albums, which are also available separately. The Last Campaign is Stewart's 1985 theme album on the America of Robert Kennedy, a lovely, reflective set that echoes Kennedy more in spirit than in narrative. The Trio Years presents Stewart's re-recordings of songs he wrote for the Kingston Trio between 1959 and 1966, on which he is joined by surviving Trio member Nick Reynolds. (The credits may leave the impression that these are the original recordings; don't be fooled.) An American Folk Song Anthology contains performances of 12 mostly traditional folk songs. Stewart betrays some evidence of vocal deterioration on these recent recordings, but remains an effective interpreter. The overall effect is more miscellaneous than comprehensive, and at a total running time well under two hours, this is a fairly short three-disc set. At the discount price typical of Laser Light product, it's not a bargain, but may be reasonable value for money. ~ William Ruhlmann
