ヘンデルの最後のオラトリオ、「テオドーラ」の内容は殉教的なもので、道徳的妥当性、宗教と国家権の対立、そして異教徒とキリスト教徒の対比を崇高に描きだした、音楽的にもすばらしい傑作です。しかしながら娯楽を求めたロンドンの人々は、愛や陰謀などの劇的なもの求めていたため(逆説には音楽が難しすぎたためとも)、足を運ばなかったという不運な作品でした。1996年にグラインドボーンでクリスティが演奏したのち、2002年に手兵レザール・フロリサンとバロックの精通した歌手らを配した、優れた名盤の再発売です。なお、歌詞カードは付属しません。
