In 2009, after a 17-year hiatus, John Lydon (also known as Johnny Rotten, his stage name when he was lead singer with the Sex Pistols) assembled a new edition of his iconic alternative rock band Public Image Ltd., and the group set out on tour, playing for old and new fans in the U.K., Europe, and North America. The new PiL lineup -- with vocalist and songwriter Lydon joined by Lu Edmonds on guitar, Scott Firth on bass, and Bruce Smith on drums -- soon returned to the recording studio, and released the album This Is PiL in 2012. After three years of touring and working up new material, Public Image Ltd. have re-emerged with a new album, 2015's What the World Needs Now. The disc marks the first time the same edition of PiL has appeared on two albums in a row, with the group delivering another set of challenging and outspoken music. ~ Mark Deming|
