ヤーコプスのあざやかな演奏!

ヘンデルの劇的オラトリオ「サウル」は、1738年の夏に作曲、1739年1月に初演されました。以降ヘンデルの生前から定期的に上演された当時からの人気作。大規模な合唱、そして序曲としておかれた「シンフォニー」を始めとする非常に充実した管弦楽パートで書かれており、さらに、オラトリオとはいえ、舞台上で演出つきで上演するための実に詳細な指示も残されています。題材は旧約聖書のサムエル記に登場する指導者サウル。英雄ダビデが怪人ゴリアテを倒して戻ってくると、人々はサウルよりもダビデを賞賛するようになります。サウルはダビデに嫉妬し、殺そうとし、魔女の力までをも借りようとするなどしますがそこで現れた亡霊にサウルとその息子ヨナタンの死が予言されます。最後はダビデが人々の先頭に立つこととなり幕となる、という物語です。ヤーコプスの生き生きとした音楽づくりにあらためて感嘆してしまう演奏です。
