This is a collection of songs and excerpts from motion pictures and musical comedies. MY NAME IS BARBRA was the first Barbra Streisand television special. It was broadcast on April 28, 1965. Personnel: Barbra Streisand (vocals). Director: Joe Layton. Photographers: Peter Oliver; Sheldon J. Streisand. Arranger: Peter Matz. This magnificent album is the first of two that tied into the TV special of the same name. It went to #2 on the charts and earned Ms. Streisand a Grammy award for Best Female Vocalist. It's a wonderful compendium of show tunes, standards and originals that all come together to form a surprisingly personal memoir. From the album cover shot of a five-year-old Barbra (taken by brother Sheldon) to the short-but-sweet leadoff title track, this record exposes Barbra's feelings on relationships as well as revealing her recollections of youth. "I'm Five" and "Sweet Zoo" are both fast and funny tunes, with the latter proclaiming all the animals Barbra wants to be (done in her trademark Brooklyn accent). "Jenny Rebecca" is a touching ballad with effective harp contributions. "Where Is The Wonder" is another excellent ballad with eloquent phrasing. "Someone To Watch Over Me" contains a fabulous arrangement, and "My Man" concludes the record in a big way, with Streisand hitting a long, perfect note at the climax. The Grammy is well-deserved, as her performance is a talented expression of her feelings, yearnings, and remembrances.
