The needle dropped on this electronic milestone at just the right place and time: London, 1992, and then on to everyplace with a dance floor and a strobe light. The Hartnoll Brothers play on fans' expectations by cagily sampling tracks from their debut CD before plunging into unexplored territory, drifting from techno to trance to ambient to unclassifiable brilliance and back again. There's the oft-remixed "Impact (The Earth is Burning)," the speedy techno "Lush," and the trance-and-bass classic "Planet of the Shapes" amid the moving, bleeping rushes of beats, squiggles, loops, and euphoric crash-landings that make ORBITAL 2 the bridge between old- and new-school electronica.
The big peak here may be "Halcyon + on + on," which samples an angelic Kristy Hawkshaw vocal to breathtaking effect over warping harmonic soundscapes. Generally considered the best of the brothers' early releases, this is an essential document (also known as "the Brown Album") of a peak moment in the dawning rave counterculture. It remains a cohesive work of classic soundscapes, perfect for either dancing or trancing out on the couch.
