Judy Henske's first solo album since 1967 and her first recording of any type since two albums as part of the group Rosebud with the then-husband Jerry Yester in the early '70s, 1999's LOOSE IN THE WORLD is such a staggeringly good collection of songs that it's impossible not to wonder what took her so long. Henske's voice, an impossibly deep and sensuous instrument, sounds as good as it did in the '60s, if not better, and her songs blend folk, blues, jazz and pop into a compelling whole. Remarkably, the growling "Mad Dog Killer" and the giddily silly "Tikky Tikky Gumdrop" sound of a piece in Henske's world, and the album's sole non-original, the blues standard "Betty and Dupree," slots in perfectly next to Henske's originals. LOOSE IN THE WORLD is a most remarkable comeback.
