Leave it to the Artist Formerly Known As to continue blazing new trails. Not satisfied with simply being a musical pioneer, he's applied his adventurous spirit to the world of retail, eschewing traditional record company distribution for the 4-disc CRYSTAL BALL set, and instead marketing it chiefly through the Internet. As he casts off the shackles of music business slavery (a process already begun on the preceding EMANCIPATION), he frees his muse to lead him even further on his musical journey.
As ever, the man with the purple plan is wildly eclectic and outrageously soulful. He moves from the stone-cold funk of "Hide The Bone" to the gorgeous, elegant balladry of "Goodbye" with such seamless agility that he seems almost schizophrenic in his versatility. While danceable grooves and lustful exclamations abound, there's an underlying spiritual element at work here that gives extra depth to CRYSTAL BALL, and expands our vision of The Artist.
