Continuing the rather dark sound and themes of the preceding A BLESSING OF TEARS and THAT WHICH PASSES, 1998's THE GATES OF PARADISE is a somber (not that Robert Fripp's music is often a laugh-a-minute) and explicitly religious-sounding record. The four lengthy pieces are all given sanctified names, but Fripp isn't composing in the style of John Tavener or any other modern religious composers. Instead, he's adapted his Soundscapes composition system in such a way that the results have the solidity and low-note-held substance of much church-oriented music, while remaining resolutely Frippian.
The results can be startlingly pretty--an edited version of "Pie Jesu" was even released as a single--or dark and ponderous, as on much of the lengthy opening suite, "The Outer Darkness." By the closing "Acceptance/Sometimes God Hides," there's a genuine sense of catharsis. This is one of Fripp's strongest Soundscapes releases.
